As a huge fan of this calculator, I was thrilled that my dumb calculator review was going to help someone out. </p><p>I hadn't really thought about it after giving permission, but I was definitely interested in hearing whatever he had to say about it. </p><p>Well it came out, and I can say without exaggeration that it's the best video ever made about the TI-108. It's thoughtful, informative, artistic, and extremely thorough while also being hilarious. It's over an hour long, but well worth every minute. There are a few shout outs in it for The Calculator Review, which was great to see, but it still would have been fantastic even without using any of my content. Please check it out, it's really great!</p>calaquinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14380339234984806665noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1021200560361604126.post-14702587704277879412021-03-05T17:10:00.001-05:002021-03-05T17:10:13.172-05:00Opening the $2.49000 1st Edition KidzLabs Math Magic Box<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="BLOG_video_class" height="325" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Qajuot_5dpk" width="544" youtube-src-id="Qajuot_5dpk"></iframe></div><br /><p></p>calaquinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14380339234984806665noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1021200560361604126.post-7560408162576659292020-10-16T11:39:00.002-04:002020-10-16T11:39:31.762-04:00Review: Trisonic TS-L2535 Electronic Calculator and also I Eat the World's Hottest Jelly Beans<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="BLOG_video_class" height="325" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/SDvQ61V9h-0" width="544" youtube-src-id="SDvQ61V9h-0"></iframe></div><br /><p></p>calaquinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14380339234984806665noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1021200560361604126.post-65292987933442278192020-10-07T12:16:00.002-04:002020-10-07T12:16:33.049-04:00Review: Sharp EL-233 and also I Eat a Ghost Pepper<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="BLOG_video_class" height="325" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Lndh7dnbK9k" width="544" youtube-src-id="Lndh7dnbK9k"></iframe></div><br /> To increase the rate of calculator reviews, I will be posting some as just videos. However, you can convert decimals to fractions and vice versa with the press of a single button, so that's cool. </div><div>Converting measurement units is where this calculator really shines. It wasn't great. But this one's much different. This device aimed to be more of a standard cheap desktop calculator. In that regard, it succeeded. There's nothing really wrong with the calculator.<div><br /></div><div>The 8-digit display is extremely crisp with the black digits contrasting nicely with the background. As long as there's enough light to power the device, the display is very easy on the eyes. The contrast isn't quite so stark with the buttons, however. On the right side, the square root symbol in particular doesn't really stand out against the button compared to the other symbols. It's a minor complaint though.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0pi1fgxZ1GFhDbLcLP0hhpkCI-CG1atNqd0kdfHsI8x58WDhdUXEy972CbNTtfS34I86XtH-A2L5GHLOoBdmmlI4sksxDbDWaWqmTvdLp527c0Wo8WaSAvzVgSJApsj8uEMb6f9YFZVe7/s278/IMG_20200725_185148.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="208" data-original-width="278" height="325" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0pi1fgxZ1GFhDbLcLP0hhpkCI-CG1atNqd0kdfHsI8x58WDhdUXEy972CbNTtfS34I86XtH-A2L5GHLOoBdmmlI4sksxDbDWaWqmTvdLp527c0Wo8WaSAvzVgSJApsj8uEMb6f9YFZVe7/w435-h325/IMG_20200725_185148.jpg" width="435" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Fortunately, this unknown device doesn't attempt to deceive consumers. It's real silicon and it looks nice. Unfortunately, whoever designed this calculator used the incredibly flimsy and fragile plastic ribbon cable to connect the display to the PCB. There's no real need to take the calculator apart since the battery is accessible by removing a single screw and panel, but I still hate to see such a cheap component being used.<br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhU96lwo_CfDab3q4UYDpCOj1-BubKHnQ4ZnJyvLdefrzK2MzXsPD35iaH2uGY9TFtQDnD3bqXl0Cmjbu3MAuqYjJQjG5keA-LjkKaomOK9M3vwLPtgfpLgS8mmwKQCahSbjszRXTiCBih9/s920/IMG_20200725_184307.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="920" data-original-width="690" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhU96lwo_CfDab3q4UYDpCOj1-BubKHnQ4ZnJyvLdefrzK2MzXsPD35iaH2uGY9TFtQDnD3bqXl0Cmjbu3MAuqYjJQjG5keA-LjkKaomOK9M3vwLPtgfpLgS8mmwKQCahSbjszRXTiCBih9/w300-h400/IMG_20200725_184307.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>I have no idea what company made this calculator. In the last possible moment, I decided to do one last calculator review for the decade. I wish I had something of value to say about the past ten years but the last three have just been kind of gross. Feel free to tell me how great the economy is in the comments.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigh_ESNRCpP9x_NauhF9bzNQfXx8zxNoPgq-duh92OcHYt0hAhxZswtFLYkPuImc-FY8RdoImdj0lnxXOjO_0NeUwLI1P1JePtSDYE8GOLOUhMVjwtHfqF7Z3aHwLqPzhBwDGQ-NoPq9da/s1600/IMG_20191228_135833.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="920" data-original-width="690" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigh_ESNRCpP9x_NauhF9bzNQfXx8zxNoPgq-duh92OcHYt0hAhxZswtFLYkPuImc-FY8RdoImdj0lnxXOjO_0NeUwLI1P1JePtSDYE8GOLOUhMVjwtHfqF7Z3aHwLqPzhBwDGQ-NoPq9da/s400/IMG_20191228_135833.jpg" width="300" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Sharp Elsi Mate EL-8036.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<a name='more'></a>Anyway, the Sharp Elsi Mate EL-8036 is a beautiful calculator. It's extremely slim for a device released way back in 1977. Yeah, I was surprised when I found that out too. The design forgoes more practical buttons for a membrane, and normally I don't like it when calculators do this. However, Sharp took a <i>calculated</i> risk here.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNYtMbNCYoVbGOTjicz68H77ayFNUSkRNWPpYwQXXt690Ts_1OOyPLvKWDKWaBo566ajcQxpBsRE5YoQG-T6g_qH0WZub2qbFM3HXF7XR4obh-HlirbLDgN0evPCd9itwKrik9-Nx5OnKg/s1600/IMG_20191228_135819.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="969" data-original-width="727" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNYtMbNCYoVbGOTjicz68H77ayFNUSkRNWPpYwQXXt690Ts_1OOyPLvKWDKWaBo566ajcQxpBsRE5YoQG-T6g_qH0WZub2qbFM3HXF7XR4obh-HlirbLDgN0evPCd9itwKrik9-Nx5OnKg/s400/IMG_20191228_135819.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
While the buttons have zero tactile feedback, the calculator uses a high-pitched beep to indicate that a number or operation has been selected. This noise can be turned off but then the only feedback you'll get is a visualization on the LCD screen.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFA0cQZe9KIYZEC5GXyELr_UZOYzqSmOM74bRbg1LPkypTR9g0ydZBO9-u-KQZM9ByhPboXyYPMCWFsu8x-0FBqJ612Lg6PynxAmFIIS5ZQ9tFjCDaT7WcaMkBJqIrQ6jn6winns29mDpp/s1600/IMG_20191228_135742.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="969" data-original-width="1292" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFA0cQZe9KIYZEC5GXyELr_UZOYzqSmOM74bRbg1LPkypTR9g0ydZBO9-u-KQZM9ByhPboXyYPMCWFsu8x-0FBqJ612Lg6PynxAmFIIS5ZQ9tFjCDaT7WcaMkBJqIrQ6jn6winns29mDpp/s320/IMG_20191228_135742.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
The display is just your standard LCD, and there's nothing that makes it stand out, but the beauty of the rest of the calculator easily makes up for this. The face plate is made of brushed aluminum and even the membrane for the buttons feels well-made.<br />
<br />
It's a good calculator. Thanks for reading.calaquinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14380339234984806665noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1021200560361604126.post-4203010120420575142019-11-05T08:30:00.000-05:002019-11-05T08:30:17.831-05:00Project 90s PC Part One: The ComputerCalculatober was a huge success but I need a break from calculators for a while. Instead, I'm going to be focusing on vintage computers and electronics again because there's so much to be done with them.<br />
<br />
At the bottom of this post I'll discuss the other projects I've been working on that haven't been updated in a while.<br />
<br />
I am very excited to introduce my newest old computer. I've been wanting to work on a late 1990s PC for a long time, and I finally found one that will make for a fun project. There were a few arbitrary requirements that the PC had to fulfill for me to buy it:<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>It had to be beige.</li>
<li>It had to be able to at least boot to the BIOS.</li>
<li>It needed to be built no later than 1999.</li>
<li>It needed to have room for expansions.</li>
<li>Most vitally and importantly, it absolutely had to have a turbo button.</li>
</ul>
<div>
So here's what I ended up buying.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVlVC9C8fPzKsKuoWRrKEilsK4SWmG8-HYy4eT0fUXW8VWSSbdnsUdIOLzh_N7eaza_w8gE9N9hfhAt1h2ipzlRP8-V0CORgQdXILQb5MA3sNX2LnWmhjHJg6Ta1hs9xsv5gr_Byyph80q/s1600/IMG_20191104_152759.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="969" data-original-width="1292" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVlVC9C8fPzKsKuoWRrKEilsK4SWmG8-HYy4eT0fUXW8VWSSbdnsUdIOLzh_N7eaza_w8gE9N9hfhAt1h2ipzlRP8-V0CORgQdXILQb5MA3sNX2LnWmhjHJg6Ta1hs9xsv5gr_Byyph80q/s400/IMG_20191104_152759.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div>
It's so beautiful. This is clearly a computer that needs some love. Definitely some retr0brighting and front bay covers at the very least. But this is just the front. Let's take a look at the other parts.<a name='more'></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqypoQTBghCGuP0d7VRwe43YkLTuCjqRfvYGhhJs_JEbG3hC4CfNNfjUuaIgpiOY-ZUbLDxzkMNCCztSpY5W3tehsPYBKhyw4jcFomrBGv2_nT4v0vTKKrufrUlJxpjrN4D27Gq6VMUU-M/s1600/IMG_20191104_173643.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="921" data-original-width="1227" height="298" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqypoQTBghCGuP0d7VRwe43YkLTuCjqRfvYGhhJs_JEbG3hC4CfNNfjUuaIgpiOY-ZUbLDxzkMNCCztSpY5W3tehsPYBKhyw4jcFomrBGv2_nT4v0vTKKrufrUlJxpjrN4D27Gq6VMUU-M/s400/IMG_20191104_173643.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div>
Here's one side, and it's pretty gross. Retr0brighting here won't be an option because this entire cover is made of metal. A good scrubbing might be enough to get it nice and pretty again.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiH5W5raXYLUWY6TRb2iPClzzwVNDaJtB5YgTjAY9Ifxhm8n2plW3vHtV6T0vGg5tjkeM8ZFrCN9EpEoXWQO0RH3DRfwy3yq6-Ki1sRSjwSqdiL3KQTYDnYFSV12_UQfZZHANyurBg1e3QJ/s1600/IMG_20191104_173804.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="920" data-original-width="690" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiH5W5raXYLUWY6TRb2iPClzzwVNDaJtB5YgTjAY9Ifxhm8n2plW3vHtV6T0vGg5tjkeM8ZFrCN9EpEoXWQO0RH3DRfwy3yq6-Ki1sRSjwSqdiL3KQTYDnYFSV12_UQfZZHANyurBg1e3QJ/s400/IMG_20191104_173804.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<div>
I've built several modern PCs and this looks positively primitive in comparison. Most of these ports are no longer in use, especially that serial port for a keyboard. Serial keyboards are prohibitively expensive, so I'll be adding a PS/2 and USB card to this machine.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLSkFZJwOtT7WOzHTw_leQBSPnDw_cOyKr3fje9mf7cI5J5Iy3X_7FfpfzJqT_z8xLr05A6k9rrOfXdKdt54_IC3DVNBjyMK8Vn2H1ax-0aQWZKlrBJdE7a-FUouhibkwopt4jIDQtGMzl/s1600/IMG_20191104_173828.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="921" data-original-width="1227" height="298" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLSkFZJwOtT7WOzHTw_leQBSPnDw_cOyKr3fje9mf7cI5J5Iy3X_7FfpfzJqT_z8xLr05A6k9rrOfXdKdt54_IC3DVNBjyMK8Vn2H1ax-0aQWZKlrBJdE7a-FUouhibkwopt4jIDQtGMzl/s400/IMG_20191104_173828.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div>
Taking off the metal cover, I saw this absolute nightmare of cables. Just for a fun comparison, here's the PC I built last year.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDVikiXuyPEvlN1EBDsfuJwV2NGrnx28wQeNPYemBeosTXr18YCtqfK4z980ORZVwk2EFLUM-fvBwB42w3sAQCQon02Hz15svFS8tb0nN3Jyw-pHiCx2RnFX0pGpjPmWpxoS51Y0CYP16c/s1600/20180213_161838.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="921" data-original-width="1227" height="298" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDVikiXuyPEvlN1EBDsfuJwV2NGrnx28wQeNPYemBeosTXr18YCtqfK4z980ORZVwk2EFLUM-fvBwB42w3sAQCQon02Hz15svFS8tb0nN3Jyw-pHiCx2RnFX0pGpjPmWpxoS51Y0CYP16c/s400/20180213_161838.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div>
Cable management is important to me, but modern PC cases and components are designed to minimize the cable exposure. Computers in the 90s used those hideous ribbon cables that don't really fit into anything. At the very least, I'd like to make it look a bit more organized. Moving on.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhcE5HGpFBles0af5LpX2s1ul2z-B4yQP1oyWVUMhYJJzWg0wtZpYH2E6cjqY250D-DmwMD-SfrfuIrNZ2rtlC6Ij2uwmZor1qMPgoMxihQAap-vlfRTeYlTgu1Z0QxAZTKL626cpiulO-/s1600/IMG_20191104_173835.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="921" data-original-width="1227" height="298" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhcE5HGpFBles0af5LpX2s1ul2z-B4yQP1oyWVUMhYJJzWg0wtZpYH2E6cjqY250D-DmwMD-SfrfuIrNZ2rtlC6Ij2uwmZor1qMPgoMxihQAap-vlfRTeYlTgu1Z0QxAZTKL626cpiulO-/s400/IMG_20191104_173835.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div>
Near the top is the graphics card, and at the bottom is a Sound Blaster 16 sound card. The video card is a mere 4 MB GPU from 1994. I will probably upgrade this to something a bit more substantial since I intend to do some retro gaming on this PC when it's done. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
But most importantly, there are two open PCI slots so I'll be able to put some more stuff in this machine.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9PsmtEz73YcZ_k2616hXNrDZMCYbINyXEtL67DyZbbBhhISshThiVlNEJLbZhOlNAW7Xf-vNAsPOmzgIg9CV5hSzRz52SXgyOtKefxeupCSA-8KnZaeJZxgnbL9FYlhGJ9pVyj-q3EF8P/s1600/IMG_20191104_173841.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="921" data-original-width="1227" height="298" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9PsmtEz73YcZ_k2616hXNrDZMCYbINyXEtL67DyZbbBhhISshThiVlNEJLbZhOlNAW7Xf-vNAsPOmzgIg9CV5hSzRz52SXgyOtKefxeupCSA-8KnZaeJZxgnbL9FYlhGJ9pVyj-q3EF8P/s400/IMG_20191104_173841.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div>
Pulling the cables aside reveals the RAM. Only two of the four (possibly six?) RAM slots are filled, so there's room to make this ancient beast a little faster. Right now there's only 64 megabytes of RAM, so I'm figuring I can get it up to 128. That's still about 500 times less than what's in my gaming PC.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhL7sM4ejxZI-Df5A7VJqAaFQFb0R3nLol82vOXoHLrZqK0_YzKXwCraLAgXSTy7oz20IweNtP-MHCPOgH6SVk58cnhDTEvi3GzyI-sIzuf2y-IVBgYK2uL6oCXLF5sa2xnLhns1UAXiMEv/s1600/IMG_20191104_173907.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="921" data-original-width="1227" height="298" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhL7sM4ejxZI-Df5A7VJqAaFQFb0R3nLol82vOXoHLrZqK0_YzKXwCraLAgXSTy7oz20IweNtP-MHCPOgH6SVk58cnhDTEvi3GzyI-sIzuf2y-IVBgYK2uL6oCXLF5sa2xnLhns1UAXiMEv/s400/IMG_20191104_173907.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div>
The bottom shows a bit of rust and two of the rubber feet are missing. Not too bad considering this computer's age.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Anyway, let's turn it on!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiReAVBR4-fcMKl6eB8FvzWkYjJBbXqi-egKycBpW8-FCJEBpe8sB2yBCtSNMGPDYYJZm9Xi0u5qfnOtkM6zFTb5s37TN7zMKbr6_J8wkXJMO6jcUP2zMNqcPD8XXb47jdXg1pTgi2E2fKf/s1600/IMG_20191104_180749.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="919" data-original-width="1226" height="298" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiReAVBR4-fcMKl6eB8FvzWkYjJBbXqi-egKycBpW8-FCJEBpe8sB2yBCtSNMGPDYYJZm9Xi0u5qfnOtkM6zFTb5s37TN7zMKbr6_J8wkXJMO6jcUP2zMNqcPD8XXb47jdXg1pTgi2E2fKf/s400/IMG_20191104_180749.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div>
No smoke is always a great sign when turning on any vintage electronics. I'm a little concerned that the Hard Disk Drive light isn't coming on, but that's not my biggest problem.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIyJ4YaOD5bFOOz2FfLi10LoHRd5veV2EWDVQi6TLwwxv-a1TFA_mf6r2712OKZdHtc6d3ymGqYOx7aCq8QD21pG8qnEmgdPF5DO-iwyCDEkqN0cIZnYt-GkcspIryOSEySYeQoMh3iuSx/s1600/IMG_20191104_180733.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="921" data-original-width="1227" height="298" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIyJ4YaOD5bFOOz2FfLi10LoHRd5veV2EWDVQi6TLwwxv-a1TFA_mf6r2712OKZdHtc6d3ymGqYOx7aCq8QD21pG8qnEmgdPF5DO-iwyCDEkqN0cIZnYt-GkcspIryOSEySYeQoMh3iuSx/s400/IMG_20191104_180733.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div>
Video output is also a great sign. The processor and memory test are good, and the CD drive is showing as good too. But after that is the first hurdle for this project. "Keyboard error or no keyboard present. Press F1 to continue."</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I was really hoping this would boot all the way to Windows 98, which is apparently installed on this machine. But without a serial keyboard, I can't move forward. I've ordered a card to insert in the back to connect a keyboard and mouse, so once that arrives I can do more stuff. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Like most things I attempt to work on, I have very little knowledge of personal computers of the 1990s. The best way to learn, for me, is to get my hands on one and mess around with it until it either breaks or I have a good understanding of what everything does. Fortunately computers after the 1980s were a lot more modular than the ancient ones, so if I mess something up, it doesn't spell the end of the machine forever.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
There's a lot I want to do with this PC, and it's going to require a lot of learning. Its primary purpose will be for retro PC gaming, so I want to get it nice and optimized for that. All components that go into this computer will have to be from 1999 and before to keep it as authentic as possible</div>
<br />
<br />
<b>Regarding Other Projects</b><br />
I have to confess that I ended up selling the Commodore 128 I'd been working on. It was way too much work and honestly a Commodore 128 doesn't do a whole lot more than a Commodore 64.<br />
<br />
Commodore Project 64 is on hold until I'm able to order some stuff that isn't currently available.<br />
<br />
The Apple Power Mac G4 has received some upgrades, so I'll be discussing that again soon.<br />
<br />
I also have several other computers and vintage electronics that I haven't even begun to work on, so those will be appearing some time in the future.<br />
<br />
And of course, there will be more calculator reviews.calaquinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14380339234984806665noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1021200560361604126.post-54162430129412706672019-10-31T08:30:00.000-04:002019-10-31T08:30:00.898-04:00Calculatober Day 31: The Aroma of Chocolate Deluxe Calculator<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

This is it. The final day of Calculatober. I can't believe it's here. And it's Halloween. So I needed to review a Halloween-themed calculator. I'm just now realizing black cats are a great Halloween symbol but I did not include my cat in this review at all.<br />

<a name='more'></a>Here is The Aroma of Chocolate Deluxe Calculator, a calculator that is supposed to look and smell like chocolate. Right off the bat, they nailed the look. The creators went all out with the chocolate theme, from the packaging to the design of the device itself. It's pretty cool.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVD_PFKi-Tb667f33tUMtkHGGTo8-0Gwi2uJWv4S1Tgaqp75NolDlsSma4cun0BFQzMHplWAUZYL5vVxOXnsn0EcoJqWTFPfrw9VsI6ylIcdTztB82za_AY5QvDP4xU69ZeqJ024oLZHW2/s1600/IMG_20191025_133424.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="214" data-original-width="285" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVD_PFKi-Tb667f33tUMtkHGGTo8-0Gwi2uJWv4S1Tgaqp75NolDlsSma4cun0BFQzMHplWAUZYL5vVxOXnsn0EcoJqWTFPfrw9VsI6ylIcdTztB82za_AY5QvDP4xU69ZeqJ024oLZHW2/s400/IMG_20191025_133424.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
The calculator is wrapped in that paper/foil substance in which commercial chocolate is typically kept. I like where they're going with this.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgR4wcjraQYFDC4rrs2jqzTF6DEb9LMq5eKh03tPcwOEM6exkrByIHQvGUXcmVOAf9GGlyzdkwjIPk4F2rmYDsQLmGvJwO4tzEupYVvvq_CkhkxNUC20M-T5kMyy1eCVAWx4Z04X0hgOCK5/s1600/IMG_20191025_133147.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="921" data-original-width="1227" height="298" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgR4wcjraQYFDC4rrs2jqzTF6DEb9LMq5eKh03tPcwOEM6exkrByIHQvGUXcmVOAf9GGlyzdkwjIPk4F2rmYDsQLmGvJwO4tzEupYVvvq_CkhkxNUC20M-T5kMyy1eCVAWx4Z04X0hgOCK5/s400/IMG_20191025_133147.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
And here's the calculator itself. It's cute. But this calculator is advertised as smelling like chocolate, so how does it smell?<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixp9GqbfSmjricL5PO8ohb0XW_4OR1m57QT_RPnWFoDlRDheO-raRv9Esep419HcV4JZbwn674yhy6AjZFJyvkW6Vgk2a3XpwgevJincv2uwK1_DLyQrUh3ljKKKb8BpMQhsNLpWnFIbOm/s1600/IMG_20191025_133442.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="921" data-original-width="1227" height="298" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixp9GqbfSmjricL5PO8ohb0XW_4OR1m57QT_RPnWFoDlRDheO-raRv9Esep419HcV4JZbwn674yhy6AjZFJyvkW6Vgk2a3XpwgevJincv2uwK1_DLyQrUh3ljKKKb8BpMQhsNLpWnFIbOm/s400/IMG_20191025_133442.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
It's pretty gross, actually. It smells like fake chocolate, and I don't know a better way to describe it. The odor rubs off on my fingers from a bit of use of the device, and it smells bad on me too.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFpcXWqRb1TzcBsxyo_6s7W3nlfMwpNXGuJ-fY_RZVkrHHrdqywWNQb09UdAioMIIqVPAFwQ61g49KgWrXwcDgCeBTMPjmL9PmYoMxGWI3KeeLPsAkZ-8UUDOurplx1JceN5Z73cRnqReO/s1600/IMG_20191025_133206.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="921" data-original-width="1227" height="298" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFpcXWqRb1TzcBsxyo_6s7W3nlfMwpNXGuJ-fY_RZVkrHHrdqywWNQb09UdAioMIIqVPAFwQ61g49KgWrXwcDgCeBTMPjmL9PmYoMxGWI3KeeLPsAkZ-8UUDOurplx1JceN5Z73cRnqReO/s400/IMG_20191025_133206.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
The buttons are also pretty bad. They're this rigid type of rubber that makes using it pretty difficult and annoying. It feels like you need to press the buttons harder than you should and it's quite uncomfortable.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Inside are pretty standard, cheap components, including a ridiculously fragile plastic connecting ribbon. I really hate these things. Fortunately, you won't need to take this device apart since it requires no batteries. It's entirely solar-powered, but this means you absolutely have to keep it in light at all times during calculations. One brief moment of no light will completely wipe everything you've done.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvH1gmNfoR-IPoQ3pOhjkhQcRSMab2ipLDsSVQJq42fQFh4e3csu7L7ezXVxjnl1etcUstZz5KWlJvaNP_hwraQhHwgkGttx8UgZBIw3YzJmGD7Hf6KS6CG2SaYqO46XUYBeQltxAXQMfe/s1600/IMG_20191025_133243.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="921" data-original-width="1227" height="298" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvH1gmNfoR-IPoQ3pOhjkhQcRSMab2ipLDsSVQJq42fQFh4e3csu7L7ezXVxjnl1etcUstZz5KWlJvaNP_hwraQhHwgkGttx8UgZBIw3YzJmGD7Hf6KS6CG2SaYqO46XUYBeQltxAXQMfe/s400/IMG_20191025_133243.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
I didn't taste this calculator because I'm not completely insane, so I can't confirm whether it's flavored like chocolate too.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSFb3gbTzYb3ZzHbu22hDuAH_-gCBqVWhC8lSvEJEe4jd3JjuNJf4IHYWzFAd5zHE2gkCNtWsUWZ04O36NJjBF-6hwXBWyv1YBbhKZI13EzcMwMUHqmfcagTN1BBkIJRNhTVz3afUCOCwf/s1600/IMG_20191025_133435.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="921" data-original-width="1227" height="298" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSFb3gbTzYb3ZzHbu22hDuAH_-gCBqVWhC8lSvEJEe4jd3JjuNJf4IHYWzFAd5zHE2gkCNtWsUWZ04O36NJjBF-6hwXBWyv1YBbhKZI13EzcMwMUHqmfcagTN1BBkIJRNhTVz3afUCOCwf/s400/IMG_20191025_133435.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
It's a gimmicky calculator, but the creators at least commit completely to the gimmick. Normally I wouldn't keep the original packaging for a calculator made in the past twenty years, but for this one I'll make an exception.<br />
<br />

I've been trying to get guest reviewers to review calculators but so far no one has sent me anything. So I figured I'd let my cat do the review. He can't type so I recommend just watching the above video.<br />

<a name='more'></a>Here's the AT&T AT-230 calculator. I don't know whether it's a promotional calculator or something given to employees, but either way there's nothing particularly interesting about it.<br />

The LCD display is pretty big for the overall size, and the buttons are nice. It doesn't feel cheaply made and the use of color is competent.<br />

It's both solar and battery powered. Opening this thing up to change the battery is pretty difficult and I felt like I broke the tabs holding it together trying to get it open.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Burger King Lisa Simpson calculator. From 2015.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<a name='more'></a>The Burger King Lisa Simpson Calculator is a kids meal toy that no kid would be happy to get. I'm a calculator collector and I'm not happy to own it. It's a promotional thing and does the bare minimum to meet the requirements of being The Simpsons-related.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-8tAJ25CuZCrQ47MKF0JmqpfPG5EVQzvbnc0oHM-6SWIRF9dt20WIikKfTEFPZBSb2pZhV3dxl5S7trYDuzsxDq0mOUcokMkyXHwv8aLXzh0QNLWbUEHEoxYY5BeX-XjnyVrggVhLN96T/s1600/IMG_20191022_104025.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="921" data-original-width="1227" height="298" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-8tAJ25CuZCrQ47MKF0JmqpfPG5EVQzvbnc0oHM-6SWIRF9dt20WIikKfTEFPZBSb2pZhV3dxl5S7trYDuzsxDq0mOUcokMkyXHwv8aLXzh0QNLWbUEHEoxYY5BeX-XjnyVrggVhLN96T/s400/IMG_20191022_104025.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
At the top is extra plastic with a sticker of Lisa Simpson. The rest of the calculator is decorated to look like graph paper and all the buttons are red with white font. The display is a basic AF LCD with no interesting features.<br />

In attempting to power on the device, I discovered the battery was dead. This calculator is only four years old, mind you. But when getting to the battery compartment, I saw that they'd used those triangle-type screws you see on old Nintendo cartridges. Fortunately, I have those on hand as I collect those and clean them. But most people probably don't have these, so they would have a much harder time changing the battery.<br />

Anyway, if you watch the video, I broke the damn battery terminal so I couldn't even use it.<br />

I really wanted to finish the last week of Calculatober with amazing, quality reviews but I'm getting burned out. There's only so much to say about many of them and I don't want to exhaust my entire supply of interesting calculators within a single month. So to ensure that some of the more amazing devices get quality reviews that they deserve, I'm going to look at mostly crap until this is over.<br />

<a name='more'></a>Yep, it's another cheap keychain calculator. This one's just like the previous crummy calculators except now it's- ah, let me look at it again- orange? The clip for the keychain is a bit bigger, and I guess it would be easy to hook up to a belt ring on jeans. But let's be real here: no one wants this calculator.<br />

It has ridges along the sides to improve grip I guess. Oh, but that clip is held on by a tiny metal ring that bends easily, so if you do clip this to anything, it will probably be lost after you move around a bit. The good news is you won't care.<br />

What do you want me to say? I can talk about the noodles I ate during the video. They're quite hot. I've had this type many times, so my reaction isn't quite as intense as the habanero or that spicy jerky. I still suffer, but I'd say the review didn't get too out of hand. Samyang makes great noodles though.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Mattel Barbie Soft Calculator.</td></tr>

<a name='more'></a>The Mattel Barbie Soft Calculator was released 16 years after the <a href="http://www.calaquin.com/2019/03/review-mattel-barbie-calculator.html">Mattel Barbie Calculator</a> that I reviewed a while back. The company "Mattel" is barely advertised on this calculator and the packaging, but it seemed weird to just call it the Barbie Soft Calculator and I don't know why.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEi9RBg0WUYV5w4ttlDWF2t5UoSHcrJWfdgtbqiXRnf0af7tMI6Fxl0sxLYx1z6tD6MDq_8n1MUlM4VV7uoz8H7TFbgyplzEeSNn8UJ8-mGvxK6MKhOLfdTUQY8EhN_ZARs_ETxl0Khxve/s1600/IMG_20191014_141455.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="921" data-original-width="1227" height="298" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEi9RBg0WUYV5w4ttlDWF2t5UoSHcrJWfdgtbqiXRnf0af7tMI6Fxl0sxLYx1z6tD6MDq_8n1MUlM4VV7uoz8H7TFbgyplzEeSNn8UJ8-mGvxK6MKhOLfdTUQY8EhN_ZARs_ETxl0Khxve/s400/IMG_20191014_141455.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div>
The primary feature of this calculator is the fact that it's soft. It's made from three layers of foam from a company called Recyco Inc (UK). I think they also made the recycled cardboard for the packaging, and maybe the plastic too. Recyco Inc worked with Impact Interactive, who also made telephones and backpacks, in addition (haha) to soft calculators for other franchises such as Winnie the Pooh. There's not much information about either of these companies, and most of what I found were Ebay listings for products with the Recyco name attached.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjPckxjvzIVp8u3sbvoK8mTv7rNKMuhG6nrrRb2pNW6UuNDGkMRuxZioo8ZJnEgyzsLyz9FOcGvZV1wEsz7FKVPfMsAPf9VGQSwbTQCcLrh298x66x0sRJGaz5vHiWlHouAEINxKld0elL/s1600/IMG_20191014_141419.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="921" data-original-width="1227" height="298" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjPckxjvzIVp8u3sbvoK8mTv7rNKMuhG6nrrRb2pNW6UuNDGkMRuxZioo8ZJnEgyzsLyz9FOcGvZV1wEsz7FKVPfMsAPf9VGQSwbTQCcLrh298x66x0sRJGaz5vHiWlHouAEINxKld0elL/s400/IMG_20191014_141419.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div>
By "soft," it really means "mostly soft" because the front of the calculator is made of a rigid plastic of some sort. Only the foam portion of the calculator can actually be considered soft. I was hoping it was made of fabric or something so I could bend it, but bending it would likely create a crease in the front or damage the electronic components. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFwASSVVf_ccylMUff74op_Wvm-h4uwRceN3Kx6px5NxV18uHCzMn16XRkHBxsvHp2DrdmeRaDKyy1K4phpr3ioiq4rwbydxOPiSDLl9BCSA1LogZNxBjEZ6jTAJDRgcvwX6S9ROTjQWVw/s1600/IMG_20191014_141428.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="921" data-original-width="1227" height="298" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFwASSVVf_ccylMUff74op_Wvm-h4uwRceN3Kx6px5NxV18uHCzMn16XRkHBxsvHp2DrdmeRaDKyy1K4phpr3ioiq4rwbydxOPiSDLl9BCSA1LogZNxBjEZ6jTAJDRgcvwX6S9ROTjQWVw/s400/IMG_20191014_141428.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div>
But how well does it calculate? It's fine. The device I have doesn't output all of the numbers correctly. In the image above, I input eight eights and two of the digits were corrupted. There's no way to fix this because there's no way to get inside the calculator without destroying it. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
It has a lot more functions than the previously reviewed Barbie Calculator, and it's entirely solar powered, so there's no need to worry about replacing batteries. The end result is a pretty boring LCD and the solar panel looks kind of out of place. It's weird that they didn't center the display over the functions. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYaa8Twep61hF0yVyZwOd3efQ-THTT2e_wUaFXlOH7YYsJXCtknZi1VvtRNw9weeOK_TjsA2wjSvREHi29tpNqd4v9_yefrtB_cPxkq7uQ-oHLAhJsP09KbKOc3mrjdliE8LtszBirA07S/s1600/IMG_20191014_141436.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="921" data-original-width="1227" height="298" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYaa8Twep61hF0yVyZwOd3efQ-THTT2e_wUaFXlOH7YYsJXCtknZi1VvtRNw9weeOK_TjsA2wjSvREHi29tpNqd4v9_yefrtB_cPxkq7uQ-oHLAhJsP09KbKOc3mrjdliE8LtszBirA07S/s400/IMG_20191014_141436.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div>
The back is shockingly bright and it's always weird to see such bright colors on something so old. This calculator came out in 1996 and remained unopened until 2019, yet still maintains a fantastic appearance. My guess is the previous owner(s) kept it out of direct sunlight. Now that I've broken the seal, this calculator is going to finally start to degrade.</div>

<div>
I found this calculator on Ebay for about $7, and at the time of writing this review, they sell for about $20. I'm kind of disappointed that it's not all that soft, but it does have a decent amount of functionality when compared to its predecessor. </div>

I've been trying to make the videos more visually interesting, so any feedback would be appreciated. It's day 23 of Calculatober and I'm determined to make the final ten the most interesting reviews of the month. And to me, the most interesting calculators are the type that are no longer relevant today but played an important role in technology.<br />

</tbody></table>
<a name='more'></a>Enter the Sharp EL-1108. This calculator wasn't the first to do anything, but it represents an era of desktop devices that has long since passed. This calculator has to be plugged in, is too large to fit in any pocket, and doesn't print anything. It is the epitome of obsolete inconvenience.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfTEC1tB5d6WwRBp2ToxT2uLnybQwwJiOAmxCG46u3UIB2D3MZVKbA9NEhyphenhyphensnF02YunKgcb8CXud2GcubsNQ7I1bkAPx9xnjnvCQdpUaErahEL-TbscsLR3WEntRFmuw88Vn-NKKKJT3oS/s1600/IMG_20191007_155028.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="921" data-original-width="1227" height="298" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfTEC1tB5d6WwRBp2ToxT2uLnybQwwJiOAmxCG46u3UIB2D3MZVKbA9NEhyphenhyphensnF02YunKgcb8CXud2GcubsNQ7I1bkAPx9xnjnvCQdpUaErahEL-TbscsLR3WEntRFmuw88Vn-NKKKJT3oS/s400/IMG_20191007_155028.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
But at one point in time it was an extremely useful tool. A user wouldn't need to worry about replacing the printing ribbon or paper spool, nor would they have to be concerned with battery life. This was a calculator that could be relied upon as long as the user had a working electrical outlet.<br />

The EL in its name is short for ELSI, which stands for "Extra Large-Scale Integrated" circuits. Large scale integration means thousands of circuits are integrated into a single silicon chip, which was essentially the birth of the micro processor. This technology paved the way for modern computing, so the early Sharp EL line played a role in that.<br />

The EL-1108 is quite beautiful, I think. The beige upper chassis contrasts well with the dark brown lower piece. The buttons look and feel fantastic, much like an old mechanical keyboard. And as anyone who has read at least a few of my reviews knows, I absolutely love love love the green fluorescent display. It's bright and bold and handles up to ten digits, along with commas and an indicator for whether the memory is currently in use.<br />

One of the more interesting features on this device is the way it's kept assembled. It's held together entirely with clips, but two screws on the bottom hold covers that keep these from being easily accessed. No calculator, or even electronic device, that I've disassembled has had this, so I'm quite fascinated by it.<br />

The Sharp EL-1108 was built in Japan and sold starting in 1977. It's difficult to find information about this particular model, but I found it at Goodwill for only $5. Considering it's everything I want in a vintage calculator, I didn't hesitate to purchase it.<br />

I'm sorry, I know this is the fourth Texas Instrument device reviewed for Calculatober, but come on, they make so many different awesome calculators. I haven't even begun to review their line of graphing calculators yet, and there are still many more that aren't that type.<br />

<br />
<a name='more'></a>The Texas Instruments Speak and Math isn't <i>exactly</i> a calculator, but it's still a tool related to mathematics. It was released in 1980 to help children improve their basic math skills. It features five different "games" that cover the principles. I'll discuss each game individually, but first the device itself.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyKC_bHi-Qc28CoZx5J7FTEMSzpQ1F_H0jTXbDM-suPU6RU539jTLuv3h5cxv5N6GuP7mWXOsuOKcDhyphenhyphenFPcXEiqBz98ybpOm6HoHQfVQKbtypv9RfPQoj6hreaGzS4QU9u1QJ2UQOU_vxS/s1600/IMG_20191006_221947.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="921" data-original-width="1227" height="298" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyKC_bHi-Qc28CoZx5J7FTEMSzpQ1F_H0jTXbDM-suPU6RU539jTLuv3h5cxv5N6GuP7mWXOsuOKcDhyphenhyphenFPcXEiqBz98ybpOm6HoHQfVQKbtypv9RfPQoj6hreaGzS4QU9u1QJ2UQOU_vxS/s400/IMG_20191006_221947.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
The Speak and Math, or S&M, is quite rugged, built with a thick plastic chassis that is so secure you'd think it was welded if you didn't look closely. Seriously, this thing is tough, as it was clearly designed to withstand the abuse of a child- I mean the abuse a child would put this toy through.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Like most of my favorite calculators, it also has a bright bluish-green fluorescent display. This contrasts well with the black overlay, and overall this device just looks really cool. I think it looks better than the red and yellow Speak and Spell or the positively hideous yellow and green Speak and Read.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

What I don't care for is the membrane buttons. They keep this looking sleek, but I don't like the way membranes feel in use. There's no tactile feedback whatsoever. This was probably an effort by Texas Instruments to keep the buttons free of debris.<br />

Being a "Speak and" toy, this device has a voice of its own that talks through a single speaker next to the display. When it's turned on and before each game, a short electronic jingle plays and I absolutely love it. The sound is unbelievably cheesy and then the voice that speaks sounds like a robot. That's because <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XsMRxNSDccc">it's actually synthesized</a>. It's impressive technology for a child's toy.<br />
<br />
Anyway, here's stuff about the games. Each game has three levels: 1, 2, and 3. Level 1 games are quite simple, but level 3 can be quite challenging even to someone as dumb as me.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Pressing the button next to the game lets you play the game next to the button.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<b>Solve It</b><br />
The display shows a simple math problem, such as 1 + 9 =, and the voice reads the problem out loud, and then you type in the answer. You can also set it to show division, multiplication, and subtraction problems. It's a basic game, but when I tried playing the level 3 division mode, I was stumped pretty quickly. There were big numbers.<br />
<br />
<b>Word Problems</b><br />
This mode is similar to Solve It, but instead of showing the problem, you only hear the voice say it. It will try to trip you up with things like "if 2 + 2 is 4, what is 3 + 2?" It's silly, but I remember having to answer verbal math problems in elementary school at one point, so I guess it's pretty useful.<br />
<br />
<b>Greater/Less</b><br />
Here you're given either two numbers or one number and a small math problem, and you have to figure out which one is the bigger number, id est "7 + 8 _ 14." If the left side is greater, you select >, and if it's smaller, you select <. It's trickier than it sounds and forces you to stop and think before answering.<br />
<br />
<b>Write It</b><br />
The voice says a number and you type it. That's it. It's not challenging, but I guess it helps kids learn how to write numbers? I just got bored with it very quickly.<br />
<br />
<b>Number Stumper</b><br />
While Write It was the most boring game, Number Stumper is my least favorite on the machine. You have to guess a two-digit number by pressing numbers. The computer voice will tell you if either number is in the hidden number. It's like the game Mastermind (or Codebreaker) but way more basic and way more bad. You only have a limited number of attempt, maybe ten, and it require more luck than skill. Maybe there's a way to play it that doesn't involve luck but I don't care because this game sucks.<br />
<br />
I hate to end the game reviews on a sour note, but Number Stumper is the listed at the bottom.<br />

I love the Speak and Math despite not being even close to the demographic it was designed for. I wish I could play with it with the mind of a child in 1980. Would it have blown my mind, or would I have got bored of it within a few minutes?<br />

This device uses 4 C batteries or can be plugged in with a 6 volt adapter. I had no trouble using a 12 volt adapter with it. It was released in 1980 for an MSRP of $50, or $155 if adjusted for inflation in 2019. The one I have is in fantastic condition, but I did have to replace the foam in front of the speaker as it had crumbled into nothingness. I've seen these in much worse condition, but this review should stand as a testament to the survivability of this amazing toy.calaquinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14380339234984806665noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1021200560361604126.post-58314136271165695552019-10-22T08:30:00.000-04:002019-10-22T08:30:02.732-04:00Calculatober Day 22: Victor Adding Machine from 1949<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

The Calculator Review began roughly one year ago, and at the time I only had a dozen or so calculators. It wasn't until I came across the adding machine I'm reviewing today that I considered taking the hobby more seriously. I had walked several miles from one yard sale to the next, and after being nearly done, I drove a short distance and saw one last sale going on. There wasn't much on display, but I was immediately drawn toward the Victor Adding Machine.</div>

<a name='more'></a>To be honest, I'm not sure what the actual name or model number of this calculator is. Information about old Victor machines isn't hard to find, but for some reason this particular model isn't discussed much. It's very similar to the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_rZcjgTFeM">model 700</a>, but there are enough differences for me to be certain that the one I have is different.<br />

What I do know is that it's one of the first 10-Key portable devices ever made available for public consumption. These were very advanced for their time, as most portable devices before had 10 keys for each digit in columns, resulting many more keys (see image at the bottom of this post). They weren't difficult to use, but they weren't nearly as elegant as the 10-key adding machines.</div>

And wow is this adding machine elegant. It looks like something that would fit right in in a 1940s science fiction movie. It's only when the outer shell is removed that the illusion falls apart, but it's replaced by a sense of awe inside. The engineering that goes into these devices is simply incredible. This machine is capable storing and adding values within its gears and levers. For the first week I had it, I didn't realize it was adding numbers together until I pulled down on the T lever and was shown a very large value that was the result of all of my toying with this thing. </div>

As much as I would love to take a deep dive into the mechanics of the Victor, I don't want to risk damaging a perfectly functional device. This thing has been working perfectly for 70 years and I hope it continues to work for many, many more years.<br />

Using the Victor, it's unlike anything I've previously reviewed. Every button press feels deliberate and weighty. Pulling the lever to add to the total results in lots of clicking that sounds fantastic. You can literally hear the gears inside turning and performing calculations. Seeing the result printed on the browning paper only adds (haha) to the satisfaction of each and every operation.<br />

I was only able to determine the year this Victor was built thanks to a chart I found <a href="https://munk.org/typecast/2015/09/20/victor-adding-machine-age-list-womda-1973/">here</a>. It lists serial number ranges and which year those devices were sold. Mine has the serial number 657128. As far as I can tell, the list covers a variety of adding machines built by Victor, so devices sold in 1933 were much different than what I've reviewed here.<br />

It's the final ten days of Calculatober. The response to this month of calculator goodness has been very positive. It's been a lot of fun and I'm glad to have reviewed a good chunk of my collection.<br />

<a name='more'></a>The Ultmost Technology UT-6166 Talking Calculator is a unique looking device due to its horizontal design and buttons you wouldn't typically see on calculators. It doesn't do anything amazing with its colors, and the buttons are the chiclet type that I don't really like. There's also a hole on the upper right that is not in fact an indicator that something is missing, but an intentional design by Ultmost. My best guess is that it somehow makes the audio from the device louder.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwh0ZCvm6syhQMOGi8UyuFp_UBYWJmhw8C2BRAc3EwR-wUHx0F_M4FQK2Kx56OEnSrZiUVURv66Jb0Z3jlcKnY3Od6L-ztt05YhsWoM6hFp690LTrjNwYcs7OUrqueHZ3v0ivrOOvvqFMu/s1600/IMG_20191006_134454.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="921" data-original-width="1227" height="298" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwh0ZCvm6syhQMOGi8UyuFp_UBYWJmhw8C2BRAc3EwR-wUHx0F_M4FQK2Kx56OEnSrZiUVURv66Jb0Z3jlcKnY3Od6L-ztt05YhsWoM6hFp690LTrjNwYcs7OUrqueHZ3v0ivrOOvvqFMu/s400/IMG_20191006_134454.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div>
And wow is it loud. It has three volume settings: silent, extremely loud, and ear-bleedingly loud. The UT-6166 is a talking calculator, and it's made for people who have vision impairments. When the volume isn't muted, it screams out every button the user presses and shouts the results of calculations. For the most part, the voice is clear enough to understand easily, but the multiplication button, "times" sounds like "hmm." </div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

The speed of the voice can also be changed via four buttons on the left. I keep it at maximum speed because reading out all of the digits can feel painfully slow, but it's a useful feature for someone who also may not hear very clearly.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglnJEgxFzPHwoGDBlWEF_Dcr1bbIW7N5HgZrpZgvsqiDz4OU9tQM2cMuJPgmLmPrjejKIqvn1OTt7sD853d4MO7wzf1LDOnBiocgsJkl9GIrlD0-W8I_ZS0iyKNQTsYXeBADpV3Wv1js_y/s1600/IMG_20190919_200311.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="921" data-original-width="1227" height="298" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglnJEgxFzPHwoGDBlWEF_Dcr1bbIW7N5HgZrpZgvsqiDz4OU9tQM2cMuJPgmLmPrjejKIqvn1OTt7sD853d4MO7wzf1LDOnBiocgsJkl9GIrlD0-W8I_ZS0iyKNQTsYXeBADpV3Wv1js_y/s400/IMG_20190919_200311.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div>
Unfortunately, the device I have has issues with its LCD display. The last and third-to-last digit don't display properly. But that's quite okay because this calculator doesn't really need a display! </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
While I love the idea of a calculator designed for the visually impaired, the UT-6166 lacks one very important feature: tactile feedback. Every button, with the exception of the "repeat" button, feels identical. There is no delete button, so there's a good chance someone who isn't able to see the buttons clearly will make a mistake and have to start a calculation from the beginning.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Despite this calculator being released in 1991, its creator, Ultmost, responded very quickly to my email when I contacted them for information about the device. From them I was able to get the year it was released and that it was initially sold for an MSRP of 39 USD. Many thanks to the person who took the time to respond.</div>

<br />
A while back I posted <a href="http://www.calaquin.com/2019/03/calculator-collecting-the-graveyard.html">The Calculator Graveyard</a>. In it I discussed calculators in my collection that don't work for whatever reason and thus cannot be reviewed. Fortunately, the company I purchased the Unknown Clear Calculator from sent me another one after I told them about it arriving broken.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<a name='more'></a>This Unknown Clear Calculator (UCC[?]) is quite thin. It's also clear. It's also not very good.<br />

It looked really nice when I first removed it from its packaging, but since then it has acquired several scratches on its surface. The functionality isn't affected, but since I have a broken one, I can confirm that functionality is broken if the glass or plastic or whatever shatters anywhere.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgV7jnLRiRwaivIpK9WK62pTJ1_Be1XOgkq2Ig6Ab0JA9ZL8uPn4mRyubrs3SHnYNQjkbu45DOQJ4QKEdWkybAXnBltdhW78uIJJbLL3pLFY_PfpBojtmDx_ZmE6ixV_zIKloym4NCrsm0y/s1600/IMG_20191005_181148.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="969" data-original-width="1292" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgV7jnLRiRwaivIpK9WK62pTJ1_Be1XOgkq2Ig6Ab0JA9ZL8uPn4mRyubrs3SHnYNQjkbu45DOQJ4QKEdWkybAXnBltdhW78uIJJbLL3pLFY_PfpBojtmDx_ZmE6ixV_zIKloym4NCrsm0y/s400/IMG_20191005_181148.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Being a purely solar calculator, the UCC will simply not work without a sufficient light source. Since it's made of shiny stuff, it reflects a lot of light back into the user's eyes. It also made recording the review video extremely difficult.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmnWaAlbowZpxmSMHw5gI7RPQLbDFFrD0cuW6DXa9SYG5IQksPKPU8SR9P7jynfaIGKYj3K_j9hBiyn1An17-ViMktlXO_H7vmnw3_2OVQeCTzorzk7rNTx_sUEPnlqkh6PPaJSbJwhu_6/s1600/IMG_20191005_181124.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="921" data-original-width="1227" height="298" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmnWaAlbowZpxmSMHw5gI7RPQLbDFFrD0cuW6DXa9SYG5IQksPKPU8SR9P7jynfaIGKYj3K_j9hBiyn1An17-ViMktlXO_H7vmnw3_2OVQeCTzorzk7rNTx_sUEPnlqkh6PPaJSbJwhu_6/s400/IMG_20191005_181124.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
The "buttons" have zero tactile feedback and aren't 100% reliable. I've made many mistakes while performing calculations with this device and being unable to delete inputs makes using the UCC an exercise in frustration.<br />
<br />
For $1.86 on Ebay, all you're getting is the uniqueness of the fact that this calculator is clear. There have been several calculators I've already reviewed that cost $1.00 that I would recommend long before this one. It's a neat idea, but in reality it's just not a good calculator.<br />
<br />
I don't know who made this device or even what country it comes from. There is no information to be found anywhere on it.calaquinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14380339234984806665noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1021200560361604126.post-50087999580646898762019-10-19T08:09:00.000-04:002019-10-19T08:09:24.631-04:00Calculatober Day 19: Casio MS-80TV<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Today's video review is probably my worst one yet. I got a cheap GoPro knockoff camera hoping it would make recording these easier, but it only makes it harder and worse. But I've still uploaded the video because I have a lot more of these to make and this month it's quantity over quality.<br />

<a name='more'></a>Being no stranger to <a href="http://www.calaquin.com/search?q=Casio">Casio calculators</a>, I figured I'd pick a fairly generic device from them for this review to test the new camera. The Casio MS-80TV meets that generic requirement and doesn't do a lot to exceed it. It's a good calculator, but there's nothing special going on with it. The colors are pleasant enough yet do nothing to stand out. The buttons are fine. The display is fine. It's all just fine.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

The MS-80TV is dual-powered by light and a single LR54 battery. I don't keep this type of battery on hand, but an LR55 worked perfectly. Casio isn't the type of company to fake a solar cell, and I could be certain of this one because the battery was dead but I could still turn on the device with a sufficient light source.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

As far as I can tell, this came out in 2006 or earlier. The only source I could find was a Casio Calculator Catalog dated 2006-2007. It's frustrating trying to find reliable information about discontinued calculators, but if I ever find the actual release year I'll update this review.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

The biggest flaw I can find with the MS-80TV is replacing the battery proved to be more difficult than it should have been. Two screws hold the back panel in place, and then it's extremely difficult to pry the entire device apart to get to the battery. Doing this caused a small amount of damage on the sides.<br />
<br />
And that's it I guess. Oh, I found it at Goodwill for $1.49.<br />

I am not a superstitious person and I've never had any interest in astrology, but when I discovered the Astro by Kosmos, I knew I had to get my hands on one. They appear on Ebay from time to time, but often are non-working or very expensive. I managed to get one for around $20, and it turned out to be everything I was hoping it would be.<br />

<a name='more'></a>Right out of the box, this is one of the sleekest calculators I've ever laid eyes on. It looks like something a futuristic religious cult would use in an episode of Star Trek. It has a beautiful blue brushed aluminum face plate accentuated by many other shades of blue in the buttons, text, and display. Turning it on, you're greeted with amazing teal fluorescent digits.<br />

In calculator mode, it only features the four basic functions: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. It works just fine, and since this calculator comes from 1979, basic functionality like this wasn't uncommon in handheld calculators. Already I'd recommend it as a beautiful vintage device.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhS4wBir8aUtbIeHQfIbV-65jf2xTll1tIcb2gPX6EGTGM7J4EqnfKiUUrjTTeLFlcF-Ny99z9SyuyQUaK8B_mSYs_H1cvByZtiRa9jutKzi_-sR5ILqOUWauiYWRk7w7itWXraKWpyPwx/s1600/Capt2ure.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="509" data-original-width="657" height="308" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhS4wBir8aUtbIeHQfIbV-65jf2xTll1tIcb2gPX6EGTGM7J4EqnfKiUUrjTTeLFlcF-Ny99z9SyuyQUaK8B_mSYs_H1cvByZtiRa9jutKzi_-sR5ILqOUWauiYWRk7w7itWXraKWpyPwx/s400/Capt2ure.PNG" width="400" /></a></div>
Switching to astro mode is where the more unique bits of this device's functionality are. By entering a birth date [month, day, and last two digits of the year] and pressing B1, the Kosmos will calculate the positions of the Sun, Mercury, Venus, and Mars in the sky on that date. This takes a little while, but you can see the digits on the display flicker during the process. When it's done, you can then use this information to find the astrological characteristics a person born on this day is supposed to have.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUYn4oVMlttOuLXMdHNqCmdAXu95XLz4WhtvvyXIHYoTZsFCwK9-jOTN83weAVRnpQWBpNDjFFQq-zJuHyngK0i2xWyyZH3FBFGmX_6Nl9gNYwpFs5C0MaV9hwMdbeIzaFrF7li4LTLcok/s1600/Capture.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="499" data-original-width="643" height="310" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUYn4oVMlttOuLXMdHNqCmdAXu95XLz4WhtvvyXIHYoTZsFCwK9-jOTN83weAVRnpQWBpNDjFFQq-zJuHyngK0i2xWyyZH3FBFGmX_6Nl9gNYwpFs5C0MaV9hwMdbeIzaFrF7li4LTLcok/s400/Capture.PNG" width="400" /></a></div>
By entering a second date and pressing B2, you can find out what astrology has to say about two different people and their compatibility with one another. The device gets even further in-depth with this by answering various questions they might have. The picture above from the manual explains it better than I can.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Sadly, I couldn't get inside this device without removing the sticker on the back. I don't want to cause any harm to this calculator given how unique and difficult to find it is.<br />
<br />
There are other capabilities, such as daily horoscopes, but I don't particularly care about this stuff. If you're really interested in seeing all if it, I've linked a <a href="https://www.manualslib.com/manual/1002005/Kosmos-Astro.html">website that has its manual here</a>.<br />

I'm starting to notice a trend in keychain calculators. They aren't good. Pocket calculators have practically been perfected over the years, but their smaller cousin type just never quite reach a level above crummy.<br />

<a name='more'></a>The Staples FaceTime Keychain Calculator set out to be different from the rest by being customizable. It sports four different designs to "express your style" as the packaging puts it. I was intrigued by this because customization has never really been a factor in any other calculator I've reviewed.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzp1UWD4A2yAprG0J4FQOHCeUFxB3Kd4Th5f6Dg5yJLPtoeFnS0qKorDPPRw85gL9MY1AUU6p2G4I_aJn148Hy0e2ar0OiUvjq1K8xfUvY5zXhNzWJedCg0M80EIPeU5-OmVbGnejQh1lv/s1600/IMG_20190922_184400.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="921" data-original-width="1227" height="298" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzp1UWD4A2yAprG0J4FQOHCeUFxB3Kd4Th5f6Dg5yJLPtoeFnS0qKorDPPRw85gL9MY1AUU6p2G4I_aJn148Hy0e2ar0OiUvjq1K8xfUvY5zXhNzWJedCg0M80EIPeU5-OmVbGnejQh1lv/s400/IMG_20190922_184400.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
Sadly, there's not much to choose from, but I guess you could print out additional faceplate designs if you really felt the need to express yourself via a 99 cent keychain calculator. But even if there were an infinite amount of designs readily available, it wouldn't change the fact that this calculator sucks.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2m2rnp_G424BEpZNlpDLoeB8Ai-sSYDD1YMug53nD-BGIbplhRoukup5OyMLAz9Wb2y1LxnlMPLAbOxebQhfBYGCdErq9iL5MJptLsmowOaB58Vtcal7FzBuNuS5BYS9k0dQBiLK24M1a/s1600/IMG_20190922_184427.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="921" data-original-width="1227" height="298" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2m2rnp_G424BEpZNlpDLoeB8Ai-sSYDD1YMug53nD-BGIbplhRoukup5OyMLAz9Wb2y1LxnlMPLAbOxebQhfBYGCdErq9iL5MJptLsmowOaB58Vtcal7FzBuNuS5BYS9k0dQBiLK24M1a/s400/IMG_20190922_184427.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
Sticking with the aesthetic for a moment, I want to point out that roughly half of the front of the calculator is not customizable. The protective cover for the designs doesn't include a thick white border around the LCD display or the buttons. Whatever design you choose, it's going to be that plus a lot of boring white.<br />

<br />
None of the buttons are in an intuitive position. The on button is mixed in with the ring of numbers, the equals sign is in the center, and the function buttons are at the top. They work just fine, but their awkward positioning completely negates that.<br />

And my god, the entire thing just feels so cheap. The cardboard and plastic packaging feel more substantial than the calculator. The plastic is brittle, the designs are printed on ultra-thin paper, and it doesn't take much effort to disassemble the whole thing by accident. I have seen far better calculators for only a dollar. Staples barely tried with this thing.<br />
<br />
I don't recommend the Staples FaceTime Keychain Calculator.<br />

Yesterday's TI-30XA review was for a solid scientific calculator at a budget price. But what if you wanted to pay a bit more for something worse? Where would you turn?<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMx-jSjmTY80gFMeRhlEBRN6-LuxcuKsuLku5hdXSxrgh1JHUC286LDOQgxMPne_DK1IMfBceaigIzoDm_Jk6TWcjViXRQbVM51aP8NTr9UGnGr8z-XQ9wpOcj8Nx-OBzbBre6cWBk_Zea/s1600/IMG_20190922_180030.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="920" data-original-width="690" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMx-jSjmTY80gFMeRhlEBRN6-LuxcuKsuLku5hdXSxrgh1JHUC286LDOQgxMPne_DK1IMfBceaigIzoDm_Jk6TWcjViXRQbVM51aP8NTr9UGnGr8z-XQ9wpOcj8Nx-OBzbBre6cWBk_Zea/s400/IMG_20190922_180030.jpg" width="300" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Sentry CA700 Scientific Calculator in original packaging.</td></tr>

<a name='more'></a>The Sentry CA700 Scientific Calculator costs nearly twice as much and is half as good! Before removing it from its packaging, I was expecting to be greeted with a perfectly fine alternative to the 30XA. Even as it came out of the packaging, I noticed it had a nice brushed aluminum face plate and a few interesting functions the 30XA doesn't have, such as a random number generator and replay buttons. Even the transparent cover looked quite nice.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4p27QC-kvw46D7n-TGnN3LhAg4Biiir_o9FiWzY3SCkuP9pFtMjZoO_6b3nMg3oO6qRUqU2Ks2qlYfkqpNXJa01skWY0bDI00r6iXm9Zmvg34NMLXKOYTzpX-19WLUqVDj5vUBVk4yJjf/s1600/IMG_20190922_181258.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="920" data-original-width="690" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4p27QC-kvw46D7n-TGnN3LhAg4Biiir_o9FiWzY3SCkuP9pFtMjZoO_6b3nMg3oO6qRUqU2Ks2qlYfkqpNXJa01skWY0bDI00r6iXm9Zmvg34NMLXKOYTzpX-19WLUqVDj5vUBVk4yJjf/s400/IMG_20190922_181258.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
But when I set the calculator down to begin my inputs, I noticed a huge problem.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPtys8Egjte9uo5PU9pJfR8WY33jyydVAa4c_nqxfe7qwOXdgJGONf7or-C6z9Wp_GQIDxLzKLwTfkvF1557AYXJBiel1W09-zQOTFXkkzsd22Sd-GOYZpMuGnoemWffdyXNAt4AKPWE4P/s1600/IMG_20190922_181306.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="920" data-original-width="690" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPtys8Egjte9uo5PU9pJfR8WY33jyydVAa4c_nqxfe7qwOXdgJGONf7or-C6z9Wp_GQIDxLzKLwTfkvF1557AYXJBiel1W09-zQOTFXkkzsd22Sd-GOYZpMuGnoemWffdyXNAt4AKPWE4P/s400/IMG_20190922_181306.jpg" width="300" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Same as the above picture, just at an angle.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
The display is awful. It has to be viewed from directly above to be perfectly readable. Maybe Sentry was trying to make it harder for others to read, or maybe they wanted to encourage good posture, but either way I hate it.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiKz5hPb054xtVa40W_k07eokmbZIZKa8nDbOiWWL6bWEpI4KutAXPkcAaKp0W73StymzJqGO1DPIYQM_TcHNF-EG85ds8Y8ciwMMhJE_dWxIFMizhgevQreUVY6p6aq4scFHZi8NrOO3aU/s1600/IMG_20190922_181320.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="920" data-original-width="690" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiKz5hPb054xtVa40W_k07eokmbZIZKa8nDbOiWWL6bWEpI4KutAXPkcAaKp0W73StymzJqGO1DPIYQM_TcHNF-EG85ds8Y8ciwMMhJE_dWxIFMizhgevQreUVY6p6aq4scFHZi8NrOO3aU/s400/IMG_20190922_181320.jpg" width="300" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">I really like the transparent protective cover though.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
The buttons are also spaced just a little too far apart to feel comfortable. While its buttons weren't perfect, the 30XA felt just fine during use. The Sentry CA700 feels awkward. To make it even worse, they placed the off button in the top right and the AC/On button at the lower right. I don't know of any other calculator that places its critical buttons like this. It's horrible and I kept finding myself pressing off when I was just trying to clear the display.<br />

Most of my overtly negative reviews of calculators have been for devices that are cheap or scammy, but this is the first time I've experienced such a terrible device that was clearly trying to be nice. Sentry tried to compete with the TI-30XA, but they failed badly with the CA700.<br />
